Ed Kashi, The refrigerator graveyard at the Gentilly Landfill in Slidell. Workers in hazmat suits and with respirators first empty out the old foodstuffs from the thousands of refrigerators left by Hurricane Katrina. Heavy equipment then takes the emtpy fridge to be crushed and shredded before final disposal. The food is gathered in plastic tarps and then disposed in another landfill nearby. This is a staging ground for white goods, refrigerators, washing machines, stoves, dryers. So far 57 million cubic yards of debris has been collected from the disaster. That is the equivalent of 9000 football fields covered three feet deep with garbage. There are 152,000 refrigerators that have been collected so far. All refrigerants and the frames are recycled. |
